Suris have become somewhat of a passion for
Pucara Alpaca Stud. When Roger Haldane first told us about "the
Peruvians" in the U.S. in 1993 we quickly heeded his wise words
and took off for our first taste of international alpaca travel.
The Peruvians stunned us.
The huacaya were superb. Hemingway was incredible, of whom we managed
to buy a share of. But the suris were breath taking. When Alan first
saw a paddock of yearling coloured suris at Alpacas of America a
plan was hatched. Pucara actually sold its U.S. herd of import Peruvian
huacaya females, to finance an import of U.S. bred suris. It was
a huge gamble but the
rewards have been significant
In 1997 Al and Jude unloaded their first suri imports. It's been
a labour of love richly rewarded with unparalleled show ring success
and sales. See
a sequence of our suris and their tale.
The final part of the suri plan is now drawing close. All the
progeny of the A.R.I registered suris have been kept registered
in the U.S. An export now of Australian bred A.R.I registered
suris is being sent to the U.S. , mid 2004, to take advantage
of a weak Australian dollar and a thriving U.S. alpaca market.
