Our Invitation To Join The Industry..
There has never been a better time to become involved in alpaca
breeding. Prices are now far more discerning with entry available
at all levels of quality. At the same time there are very real
financial opportunities in an industry that has come of age, if
you are prepared to treat the alpaca as any other successful business
venture you might embark upon. Alpaca breeders now own organizations
that design and manufacture alpaca product. The industry since
its start back in the late 1980’s has matured immeasurably
compared to other exotic livestock enterprises.
Prices..
The sale prices for alpaca have matured to a degree where there
is a discerning "J curve" of purchasing cost. Older,
lesser quality animals can be bought at far lower prices in comparison
to the high quality, highly sought after show quality animals,
that fetch high prices. In between, the average proven breeders
who have Australian pedigree and recognised breeding lines are
available at affordable prices that can give discerning buyers
a very good base to start from. Price nearly always is a reflection
of quality, but it pays to look and compare many animals before
committing.
The National Association..
The administration of the industry is based on well managed democratic
guidelines. The Australian Alpaca Association has regions in every
state of Australia with a National Committee that is pledged to
the well being of its members. Having some 1,700 members, the
AAA runs it's own registry that records the pedigree of all animals
registered in its files. The AAA also run a vibrant showing schedule
that showcases the marvellous improvement breeders have made to
the alpaca since first being imported.
Commercial Viability..
For so long alternative or exotic livestock industries in Australia
, indeed worldwide, have failed from their inability to engage
in the vertical integration of their product. Australian alpaca
breeders have reversed that trend. Alpaca breeders now own and
operate the Australian Alpaca Co-operative Ltd, an organization
that purchases breeder members fibre and manufactures end product.
The maturity with which the AA Co-op has treated the development
of end product is outstanding. Alpaca fiber is known world wide
as a luxurious fiber and Pucara as supporter of the Alpaca Co-op
salute the development of alpaca fiber marketing in Australia.
There Are Still Only A Limited Number
Of Alpacas In Australia ..(2003)
In 2003 there were just 40,000 alpacas in Australia . There were
about 25,000 registered females. As a result the average alpaca
herd in Australia is just 7-8 females!!! Please remember, there
cannot be a population explosion! They have only one baby every
13-14 months on average ( gestation is 350 days). The suri alpaca
represents an even better supply and demand ratio. With approx.
2000 plus in Australia , they are truly rare exotics that number
only between 30,000 to 50,000 worldwide. They fetch a decided
price premium because of their rarity.
Animal Management..
Alpacas really are more easily managed than a majority of commercial
and exotic livestock. They are daylight birthers, are easily trained
and transported, can be handled relatively easily, and do not
require special fencing. They will even chase foxes out of the
paddock. (See
Alpaca Facts sheet)
The Intrinsic Appeal Of The Animal..
We warn you alpacas are addictive. Besides their enchanting looks
alpaca really are easily managed livestock. They are the ideal
animal for family involvement and offer comfortable returns from
small acreages. If owners are preared to run their alpaca involvement
like any business which costs tens of thousands of dollars to
enter, they should find alpaca farming a satisfying and rewarding
enterprise. This is where advice and help from experienced successful
alpaca breeders like Pucara is invaluable.
